Compassion Focused Therapy
Compassion Focused Therapy focuses on the connection between our emotional systems and self-criticism. It recognizes that shame, trauma, and anxiety are often driven by an overactive biological threat response, not just irrational thoughts, and works with mindfulness, soothing breathing, and self-kindness to intentionally activate the body’s natural soothing and safety system as part of the therapeutic process.
What this approach focuses on
Compassion Focused Therapy helps reduce intense shame and self-criticism by intentionally building feelings of safety, warmth, and self-acceptance. Rather than just tracking or changing logical thoughts, this approach focuses on balancing the brain's evolutional emotional systems—specifically by learning how to quiet an overactive threat response and activate the body's natural soothing system. Sessions may involve mindfulness, soothing rhythm breathing, and compassionate imagery to cultivate a supportive inner voice.
How it can support you
Compassion Focused Therapy can support you in breaking free from chronic self-blame, perfectionism, and deep-seated feelings of inadequacy. By helping you develop a kinder, more compassionate relationship with yourself, this approach makes it easier to navigate difficult emotions, manage anxiety, and heal from past emotional distress, especially when you logically understand your issues but still feel stuck in negative emotions.
