CPT

Cognitive Processing Therapy

It is a structured, evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy specifically designed to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related distress.

CPT operates on the framework that PTSD symptoms occur when the natural recovery process after a traumatic event gets stalled. This usually happens because the brain creates unhelpful or inaccurate beliefs about why the trauma occurred or what it means for the future.

CPT is time-limited and highly manualized, meaning it follows a specific protocol across sessions.

  • Duration: Typically runs for 8 to 12 sessions (usually weekly or biweekly for 50–60 minutes).

  • Format: Offered as individual therapy, structured group therapy, or a combination.

  • Out-of-Session Practice: Clients complete targeted worksheets between sessions to practice identifying and challenging automatic trauma-related thoughts in real-time.

CPT also focuses on how trauma altered the client's perspective across 5 core life domains:

  1. Safety: Balancing realistic risk assessment with excessive hypervigilance.

  2. Trust: Distinguishing who is safe to trust rather than avoiding everyone.

  3. Power / Control: Reclaiming a sense of agency and efficacy.

  4. Esteem: Addressing self-blame, shame, or altered self-worth.

  5. Intimacy: Repairing the capacity to feel emotionally or physically connected to others.
